Dive Boat Wendigo

Build Thread

The Wendigo is a Scuba Diving and Salvage Platform based in Ontario Canada. The model is designed around a light ply hull frame with the hull skins, decks and cabin works done using Expanded PVC (Sintra) plastic. Sintra is light, flexible, and easy to work with, glues with Cya, and is easy to finish do to the fact that it requires no sealing, and will accept any paint you choose to finish it with.

Power is provided by a 7.2V Speed 400 motor and a 6 cell (7.2 V) 1400 mah NiCAD battery and 2 ch. R/C. This is definitely one of those models that's never really finished, but one where you just have to pick a place and stop. But it's also easy enough to build that a novice could handle it just fine with a bit of help from an experienced builder should he find himself in a bit of trouble.

Running the Wendigo is the icing on the cake. It's probably just about the most stable boat I've ever had, and in spite of the large side area handles beautifully, even in breezy conditions. The Direct drive S-400 delivers way more power then is needed for a nice scale cruise speed, but will run for almost 2 hours. In all, I would call this project a grand success.

The Construction Article is in the Summer 2008 Issue of RC Boat Modeler, and Plans for the Wendigo are now available either from Airage Publications, or, a Plans and Wood package, available directly from the Boat Plans page.
